TAPPING

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)

I first heard about EFT (Tapping) when our daughter was going through cancer ten years ago. In those years, I have seen amazing self-healing happen, both personally and professionally, by merely tapping on certain meridian points. Tapping can provide relief from fear, anxiety, anger, pain, PTSD, weight issues, body confidence, insomnia, phobias, grief, change unwanted habits and behaviors, and more.

I write this Blog merely to introduce you to Emotional Freedom Technique and give you some resources to educate yourself. The approach offers powerful tools for the therapist as well as a potent self-help tool for clients. It’s simple for anyone to master and it’s drug free.

EFT is a form of emotional acupressure. The healing concept of EFT is based on 5,000 years of Eastern medicine. Like acupuncture, Tapping is a technique which utilizes the body’s energy “highway” meridian points. In ancient times, the Chinese discovered 100 meridian points. With EFT, you only need to utilize 9 meridian points. They also discovered that by stimulating these meridian points, they could heal. It worked!

Running up and down either side of the body, each meridian is associated with a different organ—stomach, gallbladder, kidney, and so on. By merely tapping on these points with your fingertips, while you think about your specific problem — whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc. — and voice positive affirmations, stimulates your body’s own energy and healing power.

This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the "short-circuit" — the emotional block — from your body, thus restoring your mind/body balance.

From my own personal experiences with EFT helping my anxiety throughout our daughter’s cancer, my husband’s kidney stone pain, and our granddaughters fear of dogs after being bitten, to helping clients like Phil with his anxiety over his 4 year-old daughter’s cancer, Amy with an eating disorder, Jill with PTSD from her husband’s betrayal. John, an engineer, said he’s an analytical guy who must find the logic in everything. After one week Tapping for his anxiety over a possible job loss, he came back for our second session and said, “I can’t explain how it works, but it does and that’s all I care about.” After one more session, John felt he could tackle his anxiety on his own with Tapping as a tool.

An article in the Huffington Post headline read: PTSD Treated Successfully in 10 Sessions or Less. It stated:

Many randomized controlled trials (RCT) of EFT have shown that it is extremely effective at treating PTSD in just a few treatment sessions. In one clinical trial, veterans’ symptoms dropped by 64% after just 6 hour long sessions (Church, Hawk, et al., 2013). A replication of that study found that 90% of veterans were free of clinical symptom levels after completing treatment and that they did not relapse later (Geronilla et al., 2016).”

In December of 2012, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy struck home, located right next door to Tapping Solution’s Newtown, CT-based company. Twenty-eight lives were lost, including 20 first-grade children, their teachers and principal.

"After what happened at Sandy Hook I had the opportunity to learn tapping. It has been such a blessing in this difficult time and is helping me to sleep.”

– Margee Minier, elementary school teacher in Newtown, CT

Like anything else, there is a time and place for using Tapping, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, drugs, and surgery. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions. Keep your expectations realistic when tapping. Some issues are way more complicated than others.

There are lots of resources to teach you how to do EFT. The internet offers many. Here are a few of my favorites.
